Amazon Unbox

Community buzz around Amazon’s new video download service dubbed “Unbox” suggests it may possibly launch later today.

While iTunes has dominated the video download market for the last year, Amazon has entered the fray with “Unbox,” a new service whereby Amazon users can download videos directly from the site. Unbox will feature movie rentals at $4, and permanent movie downloads at $15. TV shows will be available for a modest $2, the same pricepoint as iTunes.

Amazon has purportedly courted industry giants Warner Bros., Fox, Paramount, MGM, Lionsgate, Sony and Universal to provide content for the service, with Disney withholding due to its iTunes allegiance. Videos downloaded through the service are said to have near-DVD quality, and can be played either through Amazon’s Unbox video player, or downloaded directly to a computer or personal video player.
