New iPods

While the hugely-touted event didn’t necessarily live up to all of the buzz and expectations, Steve Jobs’ latest keynote event in San Francisco still brought some refreshing changes to the iPod lineup.

Okay, we admit it, TechFreep screwed up on the whole Full-Screen Video iPod rumor. While the iPod did get some nice updates, it has yet to get the full-screen overhaul that many thought would have been fitting for today’s It’s Showtime promise from Steve Jobs. Still, there are some respectible updates that should give iPod some much needed traction in their recently struggling iPod lineup.

The New iPodThe new generation 5.5 iPod Video players will get a 60% brighter screen and 50% better standard battery life. Playback for these units will be improved to 6.5 hours for music or 3 hours for video, a much better figure than the 4 and 2 hours respectively from the previous generation. Games for the iPod will also be available for $4.99 apiece. Titles include Zuma, Texas Holden, Mini Golf, Cubis 2, PacMan, Tetris and a slew of others. A size increase is also at hand, with the new 80GB iPod selling for $349, a 30GB version will be available for only $249. And just for good measure Apple’s also throwing in some upgraded earbuds.

iPod shuffle has also gotten a makeover, now boasting the title of World’s Smallest mp3 player. Equipped with a 1GB flash drive, the shuffle will don a new aluminum casing and will run only $79 when it’s released in October. Not bad for a player just bigger than your thumb.

New iPod Nano and Shuffle

Finishing up the iPod category is Nano’s second generation with a new 8GB version to top off the still-available 4GB and 2GB Nanos. The 4GB nano will get a facelift with new aluminium cases in either green, silver, black, blue, or pink. The 2GB and 8GB versions will also inherit aluminium cases, but will be available only in black and silver. Pricing for the new Nano lineup rings in at $149 for 2GB, $199 for 4GB, and $249 for the 8GB model.

  1. […] According to Microsoft analyst Matt Rosoff, the upcoming Zune will be capable of playing 12 hours of music playback at 128Kbps or 3.5 hours of video with its wireless capabilities disabled. Figures for wireless-enabled playback times are not yet available. While impressive for a player of this size, the Zune’s battery life doesn’t quite stand up to that of Apple’s new 30GB and 80GB iPods. With the 30GB iPod weighing in at 14 and 4 for music and video playback hours, and the 80GB version packing an unprecedented 20 and 6, Zune’s battery life alone won’t win it any buyers. […]

[…] While initally the Zune was tailored to sell at $299, competing with the 30GB iPod of yesteryear, Steve Jobs announcement at his September 12th showtime event in San Francisco chopped the price of Apple’s 30GB model to $249, leaving Microsoft in hot water. Luckily for Microsoft, and consumers, the Zune’s premium features didn’t make the unit weren’t prohibitively expensive, and Microsoft was able cut $50 off the price to keep competitive in the holiday rush.
