Nintendo’s Wii to Demo Only at GameStop

The announcement came at GameStop’s annual sales conference, at which Dallas Morning Star reporter Victor Godinez was in attendance. In an article about the conference, published this morning, Godinez wrote:
GameStop said at the show that it will be the only retailer at launch to have playable Wii demonstration units in its stores, so gamers can test the
Wiimotefor themselves.
And while the news may come as a disappointment to consumers, it shouldn’t be much of a surprise. Retailers such as Wal-Mart have voiced concern that allowing customers to play the Wii in-store could result in injuries and potential lawsuits. Unlike other consoles, in which users remain stationary while managing the controller with their fingers, playing the Wii requires users to be more active. The Wii Nunchaku
remote will include built-in movement-sensing capabilities, allowing games to interpret users’ motions, which translate to actions in the actual game play. One can only imagine the legal implications of 10 year olds whipping Wii controllers around like tennis rackets in the middle of a store.
Wii Consoles sold in the US will include a game package called Wii Sports
, which will highlight the movement-sensing capabilities of the Wiimote. The Wii Sports package will include Tennis, Boxing, Golf, Baseball, and Bowling. Nintendo will ship 1 million Wii consoles to the US for its November 19th launch, each selling for a modest $249 US.
