Nokia introduced today a wireless radio interface called Wibree, which offers bluetooth-like connectivity, but with smaller size and power consumption.

Like Bluetooth, Wibree uses radio signals to connect electronic devices at a range of up to 30 feet. And while it provides similar functionality to Bluetooth, its smaller size and power consumption will allow manufacturers to integrated Wibree into a broader range of products, while still maintaining a 1 megabyte per second transfer rate.

Wibree technology is an important development that opens up new market opportunities and a whole new range of possibilities for mobile users, said Dr. Bob Iannucci, head of Nokia Research Center. Our aim is to establish an industry standard faster than ever before by offering an interoperable solution that can be commercialized and incorporated into products quickly.

In addition to stand-alone functionality, Wibree will also be able to piggyback on top of Bluetooth chips, allowing for devices that use both Bluetooth and Wibree connections. And while Wibree can be implemented in a broad range of applications, Nokia envisions its use specifically in button cell battery power devices such as watches, wireless keyboards, toys and sports sensors.

Nokia says they will continue to develop Wibree in cooperation with semiconductor manufacturers until the technology’s release in Q2 2007.
